Two weeks ago I posted the recipe for a delicious Indian curry. As promised, here follows the recipe for the garlic naan that I made to go with it. I understand if you’re hesitant to make your own naan, but it is much easier to make than I had expected and it’s definitely worth it!! Store-bought naan just cannot compete with the homemade version in the slightest!
As a garlic fanatic, of course I opted for the garlic version of the Indian bread and I was happy I did so. There are quite a few different naan recipes out there – some vegan, some not – and I have tried a few. The following recipe worked well for me and the bread turned out delicious!
Ingredients:
- 1.5 cups all purpose flour
- 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
- 0.75 cup water (more if required)
- 1.5 tsp dry active yeast
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1.5 tsp lemon juice
- 4 tbsp oil
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 2 – 4 cloves garlic
- 1 – 2 tsp black seeds
Instructions:
- Dissolve the yeast in 0.75 cups warm water together with the sugar.
- After a few minutes, add the flour, lemon juice, salt & oil to the water and knead to a smooth dough. Add more water if necessary.
- Cover the dough with a moist cloth and let sit it in a warm place for 1.5 – 2 hours so it doubles up in size.
- Form about 5 medium sizes balls out of the dough and keep aside for another 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, chop garlic and mix with black seeds on a flat plate.
- Take each ball of dough and with your hand press it into the garlic & black seeds so it flattens a little. Then place ball on a floured board and roll out until thin.
- Heat up a little oil in a pan and fry naan until browned, then turn and fry other side. Remove and place on a paper towel to cool.
